At the last meeting we briefly discussed building a Linux Router from a single board computer. I was poking around the net and found the OpenWrt project. I'm curious if anyone has any experience with OpenWrt? Happy Holidays, Mike OpenWrt: http://wiki.openwrt.org/FrontPage
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Yes, excellent distro.. I use it on 12 boxes which are a mix of Linksys WRT54G and WRT54GS. I do OLSR mesh networks and hot spots. Beware WRT54G with hardware version 5 does not work. as Cisco cripled the box with only 4M of ram. See info on www.openwrt.org for hardware compatibility. It's definitely not a newbie distro though, you need to know linux and networking. Some people try openwrt and are upset because it requires you to know something about Linux and networking. There are several other distros out there that are more easy, but less configurable and less hackable. :-) Enjoy, - -- - -- Karl Hiramoto <karl@hiramoto.org> Yahoo_IM = karl_hiramoto jabber.org=karl_hiramoto Mike wrote:

Bad news - Good News: FYI - LINKSYS Model Changes: The Linksys WRT54G and WRT54GS lines have moved from Linux to VXworks to reduce the cost of producing the hardware. (VXworks requires less memory, reduces the size of the flash needed for the device, which now doesn't have enough room for Linux.) Fortunately, Linksys had added a new model specifically for Linux hackers, called the "WRT54GL", (presumably the "L" is for "Linux"), which will have a street price of $50-$70, slightly higher than the VXworks models. If you want to hack on one of these boxes, make sure that you get the correct model. Versions 1 thru 4 of the WRT54G and WRT54GS were Linux based but all versions from 5 and up will be VXworks based. If you can't get a v4 or earlier model of the original line, then make sure you get a WRT54GL or be prepared to replace the internal flash component with a larger piece. http://wifinetnews.com/archives/006101.html -- Jeff Kinz, Emergent Research, Hudson, MA. speech recognition software may have been used to create this e-mail "The greatest dangers to liberty lurk in insidious encroachment by men of zeal, well-meaning but without understanding." - Brandeis To think contrary to one's era is heroism. I used to run LEAF/bering from the Linux Router project, but it seemed to die after a while and I didn't care for using an old PC with CDROM/floppy as my firewall anymore. I ended up moving to m0n0wall (http://m0n0.ch) on a WRAP board with three ethernet ports, http://www.pcengines.ch and I've been very happy. Don't bother getting a wireless card, just get a seperate Linksys WRT54G (or something like that) box and hang it off it's own network port. This setup works really nicely, and has really low power/noise, which is what I was after. m0n0wall is based on FreeBSD I admit, but that didn't stop me... :] John
I run OpenWrt at work and at home, it is a very nice piece of work, never had a lockup. If you have some more dough I recommend net4801 http://www.soekris.com/net4801.htm The one I have is currently running OpenBSD but is of course Linux friendly and you can do a lot more with it. -Matt On 12/23/05, Mike <mwp@sdf.lonestar.org> wrote:
