Even though it does not include this BROTHER model in its list, CUPS claims it sees the printer and that it turned the printer on. The printer fails the test page. All my documentation is out of date. SAMBA does not work. So much for my LINUX Antique Road Show. I'm going to do a bit of computer hardware upgrading..
Can you try just installing it with the PPD file: http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/download_prn.h... When you select the printer, instead of looking for the printer in the list, select that you have a ppd and select the ppd that you can download from the above site for your printer. I think you have a VERY Linux compatible printer. There are also some command line instructions that would make the printer show up in the list of available printers if you click on installation instructions for ppd.
