Well... it's not being utterly depreciated, it's being superseded with "udev". Basically, the /dev directory has become dynamic. http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/kernel/hotplug/udev.html Explains it quite nicely. Tim. On Mon, 2005-01-17 at 23:01 -0500, Keith Wright wrote:

Yeah, I've read about /dev going away, but I have no experience with the replacement.
BTW, you guys on WLUG are a tremendous resource.

Oh No! Don't let /dev go away!
One of the first things I ever did with my first Linux system back in 1996 was accidentally delete /dev. The result was just horrible; I don't think I can take that again.
Seriously, I haven't heard that /dev is deprecated. Who deprecates it? Where can I read about it going away? I assume the deprecator has a new plan well documented somewhere...

It turns out the solution was easy (Charles suggested it) -- upgrade. I can't find where the upgrade made the difference, but both my scanner and my cdrom behave now. I've got the right symlinks, too. Just a tip... Don't try to figure out the udev stuff in a hurry. It will make your head hurt. Bill
