REMINDER: Meeting Wed. Nov. 20, 7 PM
HI everybody, This is a reminder about the upcoming WLUG meeting, to be held on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 at 7:00 PM in Kinnicutt Hall at WPI in Worcester, MA. I'm open for topics to be discussed at this meeting. Ideally, I'm hoping somebody will volunteer at the last minute to talk to the group about some topic of interest. Surprisingly enough, this happens frequently and works out well when all is said and done, so I'm not in a panic (yet). My only problem with this is that some folks come to a meeting only if the topic is announced in advance and it is of interest to them. So, what do you say, gang? Here are some ideas which I had: a) Does anybody want to demo their scanner under Linux? How about a live install of SANE ? b) Linux software for (grand)kids - I"ve seen TuxPaint and KTuberling, there must be others. Inquiring kids want to know! c) TiVO - doesn't that run Linux? Can you do any interesting hacks to the Linux software that could be demonstrated at our meeting? d) MAME - some guys at work built a MAME machine. Maybe you did, too? Tell us about it, or better yet, bring the machine to the meeting. e) LTSP - this one might be a bit involved if the demo was from scratch, and would involve around 2 or 3 computers to be useful. Does anybody have any experience with this? f) Do you have other ideas? Let the group know what they are! The "live demo" meetings have been well received in the past, especially if some problem crops up during the demo (which makes us demo folks squirm uncomfortably, to the amusement of the audience!). I hope somebody volunteers to speak at the next meeting. It'll be pretty boring otherwise, and nobody wants that to be the case. I've been working flat out for the last couple of months and have no time to prepare anything for ths meeting. If you want to volunteer, send me or the group e-mail ASAP. Well, I won't be able to make the meeting, but if you want to see a little hack I did to my TiVo (yes, it runs Linux on a PPC processor), you can look at my homepage: http://www.kluge.net/~felicity/ It tells you what my TiVo is currently watching, as well as the listing of what it will be recording (todo), what's available to watch (now showing), and programs we told it to record (season passes). All the programming is done in TCL. I use the tivoweb software, which is essentially a webserver that interfaces with the TiVo data. I wrote/hacked together a few modules that grabs the information from the TiVo and spits it out in an easily parsible format. My linux server then grabs periodically via cron that information and puts it on the web server. :) There are some other standard modules that let you control the TiVo via web browser, etc. I really just like the fact that it uses my home broadband connection to get the daily information instead of the usual dial-up via modem. ;) -- Randomly Generated Tagline: They can always run stderr through uniq. :-) -- Larry Wall in <199704012331.PAA16535@wall.org>
I know, I know, I never come to the meetings; but I'll put in a couple of sugguestions.... How about a demo of one of the open-source pvr projects? If anyone has worked with one, that is... ***OR*** I wonder if a "patch-night" would be fun. Take a vanilla kernel, have everyone bring in their favorite patches; and people can build a custom super-kernel..... Need acpi? no problem. Need supermount? no problem (I'm a mandrake loser, sue me) Win4lin? Sure! Tpconfig? Got it right here! AMD Chip? we're compiling now Was that for PPC? Right this way.... And so on. The more I read kernel lists and such, the more I realize that I don't know half of the great kernel-patches out there; this might be a fun way to learn... Just an idea.... Hi Andy, I have, and can demo LTSP, as well as using sockets in a Linux/ Win4Lin environment to do distributed, Linux/Windows batch jobs (I have a batch job that runs perl under Linux (requires too much memory for win4lin) and three windows programs under win4lin in order to convert RTF to ThML). Rob Bellville has some Macs running LTSP at the Millbury HS, and said he'd be willing to host a WLUG meeting at the school so we could have a hands-on demo. Unfortunately, I have aconflict on Wednesdays, so can only make the Thursday meetings. Perhaps at a future date we can work something out. --Skip

OK. I"ll bite. I've got an HP OfficeJet K60 that works quite nicely under SANE. I'm afraid the demo of installing would be a bit boring... printing worked out of the box with redhat 7.3, and scanning required installing 1 rpm. I've been playing with a CGI to make scanning a bit more streamlined (and something that I can do from work when I don't feel like working). It's still a work in progress, but I can show it off too. All this and we should still be able to hit the Boytan by 7:30. :) Scott
