RE: [Wlug] RedHat 9 Network Problem
He has a router in between, shouldn't have anything to do with your ISP. Can you ping your router? Also, is it possible that your routers ip isn't 192.168.1.x? Maybe you did a firmware upgrade? -----Original Message----- From: aramico@duahati.com [mailto:aramico@duahati.com] Sent: Tuesday, March 30, 2004 8:47 PM To: Worcester Linux Users Group Subject: Re: [Wlug] RedHat 9 Network Problem Still get this problem ? Try to call your ISP and ask him to reset the settting. It ussualy happens if you change the operating system between Windows and Unix/Linux. But, it ussually works fine too if you change the computer and or the operating system to Windows too, but not for other :(( After resetting, it should be fine. Regards, Aramico

I just replaced Windows XP with RedHat 9 on one of my machines at home. My problem is that I can't connect to the network. If I specify DHCP and then try to connect I don't get any responses from my DHCP server and 'eth0' won't activate. If I specify a static IP address (i.e. 192.168.1.2) then 'eth0' will activate but I still can't get out on the network, event to ping.
My network configuration consists of a Netgear 10/100 Wireless Router connected to a Cable Modem, with a Linksys Router/Switch to the Netgear Router to expand my ports. I've been running fine from all my XP Desktops through this configuration using DHCP.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Joel,
Include your /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and your /etc/sysconfig/network files in an email so we can see what they look like.

I haven't had a chance to get the requested files off yet, but to answer your router question, pings don't seem to be going out the ethernet board at all, even when I setup a static IP. It's a netgear router which has a default address of 192.168.0.1. I also tried the Linksys default of 192.168.1.1. I also tried to ping other computers on my network. I'll try to get copies of the requests config files and post them here tonight.

Well, I got the network working. Don't know what all happened, but I uninstalled the network card, rebooted, then reinstalled it again. DHCP is now working properly. Thanks for the help

I always power down my cable modem when doing changes like that. Not sure what you're using, but if it's anything external, that generally helps "register" the new NIC. Cox in Phoenix always said to leave the cable modem unplugged for 1/2 hour. I suspect that was more so people wouldn't bug them. :) - Bob
Greetings all; Sorry i've not been able to attend the meetings in a while... still trying to get past some health problems... can any one tell me which kernel version would be suitable for a machine with 64 bit architechture? thanx in advance dave goss assimulation is futile
Well the obvious question is, "Which architecture?" I hope it's not Itanic. :-) If it's AMD64, I suspect Gentoo may be preferable. I plan on splurging on the new AMD chip in the near future and have also been trying to decide which distro to use. Any other architecture, sorry, I have no idea. -- Gary On Fri, 2 Apr 2004, David Goss wrote:

64 bit architectures have been supported for a rather long time in Linux, depending on the arch. If you're compiling a new kernel, I would suggest the 2.6 series (2.6.5 is the current version). It has a lot of improvements and is much speedier. I'm not sure which 64 bit arch you're talking about, but you may need patches to get the kernel fully stable. There are seperate sets of PPC/PPC64, Alpha and Sparc64 patches. There are probably some out there for ia64 (Itanium) and x86-64 (Athlon64) as well. On Fri, 2004-04-02 at 10:57, David Goss wrote:

my deskdtop has Kernel 2.4.22 and the config has processor options for AMD64. You might be best though with a 2.6.X kernel though I'm running 2.6.3 in gentoo-dev-sources now on my laptop, and it is going very well.
