I have a compaq EN pII350, I had one 40gb Maxtor hard drive installed and suse was running fine then I added a second 40gb Western Digital hard drive. Both of them run at 7500rpm. There are a couple of things that seam out of wack. Firest when i install only the WD as the master the computer only gives me the bios screne and nothing else. But when I have the SD set as slave adn the Maxtor as teh master it seams to detec both drives. then i go through the whold Suse install. It dects both HD drives and therwe sizes properly. After it installs and configures everyting it starts the system is fine. The problem arizes the first tiem you stry to restart the system. All it does is go through the BIOS and nest it trys to start the system but all it displays is "li". Please help I have trited many diffrent things to get it to work and am runnig out of ideas. -------------------------------------------------------------------- mail2web - Check your email from the web at http://mail2web.com/ .
Dueling hard drives? I would imagine the Maxtor would kick WD's ass and it would just sit in the corner clicking sadly.

After running into this two days ago, I can advise you that WD drives have different settings for single and master. I'm pretty sure they're the only IDE drives that still do this. That also explains why it works fine as the slave and the Maxtor as the master.

Check the LILO howto for what the letters mean, I assume you have the kernel placed outside of where the BIOS can read. Make sure you have the latest BIOS revision and the drive is set in LBA mode (and use GRUB, while you're at it). ;-) Brian J.
