Sorry, I don't know what a Linux ditro is. Yes, I am looking for a reliable vendor that offers laptops with Linux pre-installed. Any advice on the desktop program, i.e. which is better? Lindows? Red Hat? Linspire? and all the others out there? At the moment, I'm using Open Office, Thunderbird and Firefox on an old 98SE Dell Inspiron 3500, still ticking after all these years but slow. Additionally, down the road I will be researching video capture and editing suites (open source or otherwise) suitable for a Linux environment, but for now I'll be happy with the basics--an office suite, email and browsing. My bottom line is migrating from dependency on proprietary operating systems, versatility and reliability. Thanks! Marie mimsresearch@gmail.com

Are you asking about a linux ditro that's well suited to a laptop or a laptop vendor that offers laptops with linux pre-installed?

Hello,
I'm very new to Linux and I'm not a technical person. But I've learned enough about Linux to know it rocks (thanks Bob!) and to know I want a new Linux laptop. Can anyone recommend a reliable vendor? Replies off list are welcomed.

HI Marie, A "Linux distro" (short for distribution) is a collection of Linux software packaged up for ease of use. Such distributions include SuSE (Novell), RedHat, Debian, Ubuntu, and many, many others. These distributions are sometimes available in boxed sets, CDs, or download. Oops, sorry about that. Should have checked the actual article links before sending this out. You need to be a subscriber to see the articles from the current month's issue. So, either: -wait a couple weeks until they open up those articles; or -check out Kino (there were other tools mentioned but this was the big app); or -all of the above BR
