Ummm, To say that I was pissed off would be putting it mildly. In the fall, Charter announced that they were beginning a "partnership" with MSN. Fine; but I realized that this meant that Charter would be trying to get all their subscribers on to .net. I don't want passport, I don't want .net. I wrote to Charter, calmly voicing my concerns and recieved an e-mail that NO CHARTER SUBSCRIBER WOULD BE SIGNED UP FOR A MSN PASSPORT WITHOUT THEIR CONSENT. Well, imagine my surprise this weekend when I recived a "congratulations" message for "deciding" to sign-up for passport! ?!@#!!!@ And who did it to me? Charter Communications....I wrote to Charter to get me out of passport ASAP. If they refuse, how's everyone feel about dsl? Wes

SpeakEasy.net is the _only_ way to go with DSL, and I'm sure if you search the WLUG mail archives you'll come up with a dozen mentions of it (a company with a clue, real services like static IPs, encouraging servers, extremely reliable service, and so on). I'll leave it at that. =) Brian J. Conway bconway@wpi.edu "I don't think Microsoft is evil in itself. I just think that they make really crappy operating systems." - Linus Torvalds

I'll agree. My 384K SDSL is unbeatable. Plenty of packages to choose from too.... I'll chime in for Speakeasy too. I've got 384/128 and it's great. I consistantly get ~40KB down and close to 30KB up, 4 static IP addresses, and amazing reliability. Scott

That's pretty amazing -- 128kbit = 16KByte, so getting 30KB up is very good! :) -- Theo, now using a cable modem in the new apartment, waiting for next month when he can finally order SpeakEasy for the place ...

I have Charter as well but do not recall getting a message welcoming me to .NET. As a matter of fact I did not realize that they became an MSN parther. I hate to appear dumb but what does this mean to us using Linux, how would this effect us? I am not familiar with MSN Passport so I not sure what the effect will be. John "Two roads diverged in a wood, and I -- I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference." -- Robert Frost

I'm totally ignorant of the issue, but I'll answer anyway. I think the issue is that Charter passed on Wes's personal information (Name, address, and credit card or other payment info) onto Microsoft, so MS can increase their "enrollment" numbers. (The raw "number of clients" stuff looks really good for stock price, etc...) Although it's probably allowed in Charter's contract terms that no one reads, it's a really mean thing to do. I'm not familiar with the exact manner that passport manages security, (I'm sure it's stellar, given Microsoft's record) but a possibly more important issue is that now his payment info is at most as secure as the NET service itself. If someone manages to intercept an "I forgot my password" email, then they can spend his money at will. Yeah, there are a lot of reasons to not like this. Of course someone who actually uses the damn thing could probably tell us if it would be that easy to obtain his password. Anyone here a passport user? (And willing to admit it?) -Chuck
I haven't seen anything from Charter on this via snail mail myself, and I don't even use their email servers either, so maybe I'm signed up and not realizing it. So how do we check easily? John
It was all done via e-mail; so call up or access your e-mail account that you have with them... Someone wrote that the real reason that I am upset is that my "account" is now being used to inflate .net's user stats. That hit the nail on the head; what right do they have to use my account to puff up their numbers. I don't use their cruddy services! Wes John Stoffel wrote:

I went to Charter's web site http://www.chartercom.com/ourstory/ourstory.asp and found a "Rules and Policies" link which took me to http://www.chartercom.com/site/rules.asp where they try to spell everything out. I could not see where passing your info onto Microslop clearly fitted in :-) I did find "Charter requests certain personal information at the time you subscribe to Charter Pipeline. Charter requests your name, address, telephone number and e-mail address. The personal information is used to manage your account for billing purposes. It is not shared with a third party, except in very limited circumstances such as is required by law or in order to enhance your service experience." Obviously :-) , sharing the info with Redmond would *HAVE* to enhance your service experience! Incidentally, I also found "Click to find out more about Paul Allen's Wired World (TM) just above that "Rules and Policies" link so Charter and Micro$oft seem to be in bed together :-) Life is full of surprises! doug

I had known Paul Allen was a partner in Charter Cable. Was surprised when I read back over a year ago that earthlink had formed a partnership with Charter Communications. Actually I was orginally on Earthlink before I switched to Charter Cable. After I had Charter installed I called Earthlink to cancel my account, they said there was no need to. They said I could be connected to Charter Cable but still maintain my billing with Earthlink. At that time Charter in Worcester had just come online a few days. They did not have my area of Worcester on Earthlink's list yet. Rather then getting caught up between the two I just cancelled Earthlink. Now I don't know if Earthlkink supplies the actual network for Charter? Or something else might envolved? Clearly, it is time for WLUG to get into the CLEC business and establish a co-op DSL for all its members in central Mass! I think it would be a fine way to spend all that WLUG surplus money. ;-) Steve

I thought "What a dumb idea!". The money is not the issue. Think of all the work involved --- interfacing with the phone company, regulatory agencies etc. etc. And then I realized you were volunteering and I felt warm all over! :-) doug
