John et al, I think I have a real problem.. Neither OS uses /etc/X11/xorg.conf as one would expect. I think there is a book available entitled "Computing in the Middle Ages". Could it be?????

If it's a recent version of Xorg, there won't be an xorg.conf. Xorg uses HAL and crappy XML files now. If you know what modeline your monitor needs, create an xorg.conf, put the modeline in, and the monitor should work. The idea is that xorg should figure out what to do automagically, but X sucks and it never works. Giving it a working xorg.conf will make it do what you want, not it's automagic stuff.
