Re: [Wlug] Re: Configuring Linux laptop for cable modem access???
Hi Gerrald! There is nothing special you need do. I have a laptop running RH7.1 and am using a "cable modem" (Surf Board) in Shrewsbury. I also have a home network, but that doean't make any difference - you either configure the router or the PC to talk to the cable modem. Assuming you have DHCP (i.e., you do not have a static IP assigned), you should be able to simply configure your ethernet interface and plug it into the cable modem. There is a good chance eth0 is already setup if you installed RH onto the laptop with the nic card already installed. You can use Linuxconf to set up eth0 for dhcp and that is about it (use the masks given to you by the cable company, as well as DNS settings, etc.). Of course, you might want to consider putting a firewall between you and the rest of the world because when you plug your PC directly into a cable modem, the anyone on that system can now see you computer... Hi Gerrald,
I don't know the answer directly, as I don't run
home. I'm forwarding this to the WLUG mailing list, as somebody there probably knows the answer.
