Still no luck. I tried installing as root, first by logging as su and calling up mozilla from command line, and then again (when that didn't work) by backing out of X and starting over as root, calling mozilla from the menu. I've tried running SuSEconfig and tried re-booting, but it doesn't make a difference. I'm not even sure if I really downloaded the file with the browser - both times I did it, I walked away while it was downloading, and when I came back, the browser was gone. Let me take that back - I have four copies of jre131i.xpi in /tmp. Would it make sense to repeat Charles' procedure under /opt/mozilla/plugins? There aren't any jre* files there or under /root/.mozilla, and not even a plugins directory in the latter. I'm guessing that the files downloaded but didn't install. Thanks. The solution to this is to start mozilla as root, have it download and install the plugin, close the browser and then start it up as a normal user and presto java works.

When I got home last night, I tried Mozilla again, and now I remember why I stopped using it. I had trouble trying to download the java plugin when I wanted to get into a chat room.
After another failed attempt to download it with the browser, I tried gftp and got the file, jre131i.xpi but I have no idea what do do with it. There weren't any readme files nearby at the ftp site. Any ideas or suggestions are welcome. Thanks.
