Thank you all!! re: mozilla-mail Attach File(s) hung up my Fedora 3 machine. The culprit was gamin as Chuck Anderson had suggested. 'yum info' told me that there is a more recent version for Fedora 3. 'yum upgrade' installed that more recent version. The problem seems to have disappeared. Ain't open source grande! Chuck, how did you know about gam_server? Ken Jones

It is the bane of my existence. Even the latest version has issues.
I had never heard of gam-server, so I did what I always do when I don't know. I typed it into Google. The first page told me that it uses 100% CPU, deadlocks, forks, loops, leaks memory, segfaults, crashes and chokes. The second page told me the same thing in Italian, French, German, Portugese(I think) and Spanish. By page 20 I had learned to curse in most west European Languages and Chinese. I don't know enough Japanese or Czech learn much, but something told me they weren't happy either. I got to the message where Google offers to repeat the search with redundant messages included and stil don't know what it is _supposed_ to do. processi che si prendono tutta la cpu sono gam_server. Un truc bizarre m'est arrivé: gam_server dovuti a crash di gam_server, ma non capisco gam_server hingegen läuft irgendwie amok procurei saber o que era esse "gam_server" Ich habe den gam_server in Erwägung gezogen. Ein killall gam_server oder kill -9 gam_server ne veux pas lacher /media/cdrom0 proces gam_server serozhodne zlobit na procesoru (na mobilním Pentiu III @ 1200 MHz) to je bug, nš§kolik verzí :-( I upgrade it with a simple: make; make install; killall gam_server It always worked fine. That last guy seems to be the only happy one within range of a Google search. -- Keith

Very amusing. ;) Sounds like there's some low hanging fruit if anyone is looking to get involved in a project. ;) For a description of what it does, see /usr/share/doc/gamin-<n-v-r>. From the README: ,---- | Gamin is a file and directory monitoring system defined to be | a subset of the FAM (File Alteration Monitor) system. | | The main goals of the project are: | 1/ minimize the security model of FAM | 2/ simplify the code base | 3/ provide an API and ABI compatible replacement for FAM | 4/ try to fix some other issues like resource consumption `---- -Jeff

Anyone that wants to help can jump right in starting here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/buglist.cgi?product=Fedora+Core&version=devel&version=fc1&version=fc2&version=fc3&version=fc3test1&version=fc3test2&version=fc3test3&version=fc4&version=fc4test1&version=fc4test2&version=fc4test3&component=gamin&bug_status=NEW&bug_status=VERIFIED&bug_status=ASSIGNED&bug_status=REOPENED&bug_status=NEEDINFO&bug_status=MODIFIED&short_desc_type=allwordssubstr&short_desc=&long_desc_type=allwordssubstr&long_desc= and here: http://www.gnome.org/~veillard/gamin/debug.html To use gdb usefully you'll need some debuginfo packages: /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-debug.repo: [debug] name=Fedora Core $releasever - $basearch - Debug baseurl=http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/$releasever/$basearc... enabled=1 gpgcheck=1 gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora # yum install \ firefox-debuginfo \ gamin-debuginfo \ glib2-debuginfo \ glibc-debuginfo \ glibc-debuginfo-common \ glib-debuginfo \ gtk2-debuginfo \ libxml2-debuginfo \ zlib-debuginfo
