Is anyone familiar with any open-source versions of x86 emulation software that I can use instead of VMWare? It seems that the plex86 project has moved, and I can not find out much info on status of software - ie how usable etc.???? My goal is to run linux with win2k as a virtual machine for the few work related things I need.

Depending on what you're trying to do, you might also want to check out Cygwin: http://www.cygwin.com/ "Cygwin is a UNIX environment, developed by Red Hat, for Windows." It's not an x86 emulator/vmware clone, but it has a lot of the UNIX/Linux tools.

Well that's in quotes, so it's just a character string, but lest somebody mistake it for an assertion... Cygwin was developed by Cygnus Support, a company that was founded (at least in part) by John Gilmore of EFF fame. It predates RedHat by about five years. The made money selling support services for GNU software (hence the name cyGNUs). In addition to Cygwin, they did some work on gcc, and hosted the guile project for a while (Guile is GNU Scheme). They were bought by RedHat shortly after the RedHat IPO had them rolling in cash. I don't mean to get too pedantic, but next someone will be telling me that Microsoft developed DOS, and I'll have to really rant. Typing http://www.cygnus.com/ just takes you to RedHat, but http://www.redhat.com/about/presscenter/cygnus_1999/redhat-cygnus111599.html gives RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. and SUNNYVALE, CA---November 15, 1999---Red Hat®, Inc. About Cygnus Solutions ----- ------ --------- Cygnus Solutions, a leader in open source software and an innovating force in Internet software infrastructure, offers software development platforms based on an open source model. Cygnus development tools cover more than 125 host-target combinations for embedded microprocessors and are supported by one of the most experienced teams of engineers delivering custom-engineering services and developer support to top companies worldwide. There is no such company as RedHat. It is Red Hat, Inc., or just Red Hat.
Does WLUG have a pedant klaxon? We need something with a rotating light, and a strobe, that goes "Wooooo, woooo! Pedant alert!" I mean we could only use it at meetings, but I could imagine it on the mailing list, or maybe someone could make a little java applet, or something. -Chuck

[ rant/history lesson deleted for those with slow modems :-) ] For the curious, the quotes were indicating a direct quote from (the top of) http://www.cygwin.com Perhaps not the best choice of wording... considering all the individuals (besides Red Hat/Cygnus) who have helped make cygwin possible. For even earlier history of GNU software on DOS check here: http://www.delorie.com/djgpp/history.html http://www.delorie.com/djgpp/doc/eli-m17n99.html
