I'm shopping for a linux-compatible scanner, preferrably with USB connectivity. Any suggestions about models and sources? TIA, Bill

A good place to start might be at the Sane (scanner access made easy) driver compatability list http://www.mostang.com/sane/sane-backends.html -- Frank Sweetser fs at wpi.edu WPI Network Engineer

There are at least as many unsupported scanners in that list as supported scanners. My first shopping trip (to Staples in Westborough) yielded no supported scanners in the low-cost range. (I know that Staples is not the best place to look, but it's close to me.) Thanks, Bill

I have an Epson 1660 Photo scanner which works perfectly with Linux and Sane. It is my understanding that Epson has been friendly toward the Open Source community with regard to technical information, hence my decision to purchase their product(s). But, I can't get sane to recogize it. - It shows up in "lsusb" - sane-find-scanner does not find it - I added "usb /dev/usb/scanner" to /etc/sane.d/epson.conf. That didn't help, so I tried "usb 0x04b8 0x011e". These were the vendor and product codes from lsusb. - I tried "modprobe scanner" and "rmmod scanner" multiple times. - I have not modified /etc/modules.conf. Do I need something? - "chmod 666 /dev/usb/scanner0" I'm running Red Hat 8.0. Any ideas? TIA, Bill
