Hi all, At work, there are several workstations and servers (about 15) running Win2k, Win2k Server, and WinXP. I also have a server running SuSE 9.1 that has Samba 3.0.4 installed. I'm wondering if anyone out there has used Samba as a Primary Domain Controller in a Windows environment? Can Samba be used as a BDC (Backup Domain Controller)? What are the pit-falls? ... Any "war" stories? ... Advice?? Thanks, -Chuck
The official samba how-to is really good, you might want to take a look at it... http://us3.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-Guide/ The HOWTO by Example goes through a number of scenarios and explains how to setup servers to fit specific needs (inculding CUPS and LDAP)... -Jared On 5/11/05, Chuck Noyes <vze284qe@verizon.net> wrote:

As much as I'm gonna get land blasted for suggesting it, if they are windows machines, use a windows PDC. I've used a Samba PDC for a couple years and am switching over to M$ right now. It's a pain at first, but once you see the benefits and ease, you'll ask yourself why you never did it before. Just my $0.02, please don't flame me for suggesting M$ On 5/11/05, Chuck Noyes <vze284qe@verizon.net> wrote:

Actually, I think it would be more fun to lambaste you for your goofy spelling. I reserve my land blaster for SUVs that block my view.

Ill throw in with this. I actually started to reply earlier but didn't want to start anything. but yes, I love linux, but it will never emulate proprietary MS functions better than MS. You have a w2k server, just promote it to a dc and go home. now give me my change from my .02 cents! --- Keith Wright <kwright@free-comp-shop.com> wrote:

Frankly it's been my sad experience that any vendor that has spent so much money into making anything so proprietary, and you WANT to stay with it (M$ directory) then it's likely it will be more reliable (and likely intentionally designed to ONLY be) delivered on that vendor's own proprietary server OS. However, had you considered introducing a different Directory Service, then your options would have been very broad indeed. Bob Chuck Noyes wrote:
