Anyone have a good suggestion for a place to recycle junk computers cheaply. I've got a pile of dead equipment starting to fill my garage and now that it's spring, it's time to get rid of it all. Most of it actually works, it's just all P133 or PIIs and they're not worth the effort to keep running any more. Plus I've got some work stuff to get rid of too, monitors and such. John
Ebay. Sell everything for $.99 - inevitably there's always someone out there willing to take it off your hands. -Jared On 4/9/06, John Stoffel <john@stoffel.org> wrote:

There is a place in Leominster that will take it and you pay them .10cents a pound. I took 600 lbs of stuff there a while back....50 bux i think....now that i think of it, im not sure i ever paid them...but its good for the world, as they do recycle it all. --- Jared Greenwald <greenwaldjared@gmail.com> wrote:

I have zero interest in putting it up on Ebay, since it means I need to actually pack and ship the crap. It's just not worth it to me. But hey, if *you* want to do it, I'd be happy to give you all the stuff and you can do it. John

I've been listing some stuff on Craig's List (craigslist.com) under their "Free" category stating "just come and pick it up". I generally start getting responses within 2 hours and have gotten rid of a few things pretty quickly that way. -- Randomly Generated Tagline: "I sometimes think that they hire guards based on the bone content in their heads." - Londo on Babylon 5

This morning Salon.com has story on where recycled computers sometimes go: http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2006/04/10/ewaste/ There's also an accompanying story on how to recycle your computer: http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2006/04/10/greenguide/ You may need to agree to something to view the full articles for free if you don't have a subscription. I have to admit I've never given it a second thought and have left old PCs and monitors out on the walk for the trash pickup plenty of times in the past. -- Gary
We can always use working monitors, a p1 or p2 may be too old to be of any use though. We can also give tax receipts for donations. http://worcestercoop.org/ Patrick Sawyer On 4/10/06, Gary Hanley <gary@hanley.net> wrote:

Another thought: I've found that machines around 233 MHz can be used as Linux thin clients (LTSP). The issue with machines of this vintage is whether or not the video card can display a sufficient resolution to be useful with modern software. Heh, lately I've been tinkering with my first 32-bit PC, a 386DX/25 with 8MB ram, 1.44MB floppy, and an old SMC Ethernet card. I can boot 2.6.15 on it, with uClibc+busybox from the buildroot project (like Andy's RouterBoard), and still have around 200K on the floppy for apps/data. One thing that bugs me is that /proc/cpuinfo shows only 3.08 bogomips, but according to this I should be getting ~3.92, http://tldp.org/HOWTO/BogoMips/bogo-list.html#AEN244 I should check the overclockers sites, maybe some LEDs would make it go faster. ;) Granted, I wouldn't have use for 10 of these, but I like to keep a few old systems around just for fun. Anyway, I hope to make it to tonights meeting. I saw someone mention PDAs a few messages ago - I picked up an Agenda VR3 from some job lot outfit on eBay a few weeks ago. A failed product in the market, but I had always wanted one in my collection. Haven't really played with it yet, so I can't talk much about it, but I can bring it for show and tell. -Jamie
