My problem is that I understand the details of neither the kernel nor the sound card. I think everyone's advice is to: [rpm -e kernel-devel] and [rpm -ihv kernel-2.6.18-1.2849.fc6.src.rpm]. The try again according to the alsa WEB page. Sound right? Ken

You never really gave us the story on how you diagnosed that your sound card wasn't working properly (or if you did, I missed it). The FC 6 kernel supports alsa, so I'm not sure exactly why you're rebuilding at all. Is there some known erratum that addresses your particular problem? -Jeff

Generally, with distributions such as Fedora Core you never need to compile anything yourself. If should "just work" out of the box. If sound isn't working, start by posting this information from a terminal: /sbin/lsmod | grep snd /sbin/lspci -vvv
