For the last few months I've been hoping to save up some money and get a Zaurus, I don't think that it's going to happen any time soon. So, I've got an iPAQ that I can't sync, or even connect, with my linux laptop and it's beginning to get on my nerves. So, even though I've got some software on my iPAQ that I'll miss (a Bible Reader with the Greek Text and SimCity 2000), I'm thinking that it's time to take the plunge and get Linux and Qtopia on my 3835. Three Questions, 1. Has anyone on the list done this, especially with this model? 2. Has anyone who has done this used any of theKompany's embedded apps? 3. Is there anyone willing to help me do this face to face? I could do this on my own, but the idea of potentially owning a $599 paperweight dims my enthusiasm when I think of going it alone. (I'll buy the coffee) I've got a serial adapter, so that's not a problem. So, what do you say, anyone out there willing to teach me something new? Wes --

Their ogg player for one, and a couple of other things that Shawn Gordon says SHOULD run on an iPAQ. I want tKc to stay in business, so I don't mind paying some money, for stuff like that. I like their Calendar better than Qtopia's or Opie's for example. Though Opie's got the "today" screen, great touch! Will qtopia apps run in Opie, how "forked" is it?

Actually, I was thinking of just setting up shop in a local coffee house with laptop, iPAQ, and mug. How long does the install take? It might make a good meeting topic though, an "embedded linux installfest!" (Imagine trying THAT outside a bestbuy! Wes

I know of an alternative app for a BibleReader, it's the modules I'll miss. What's xbill? xbill is a game that has come with every linux disto that i've tried. It's kind of a classic linux game. Try typing 'xbill' in a shell (while in X), and take a look

ahhh, i see. I would like to see theKompany to stay in business as well. Good point. There are a couple of calendar programs, - theKompany's (never seen/used it) - OPIE's and Qtopia's (believe they are pretty simaler) - korganizer (it was ported to QTe, it has the same code base as korganizer for KDE So they both look very similar, one is just smaller than the other). Yeah, the ogg player would be nice. One of OPIE's goals is to be binary compatable with Qtopia, as well as the sharp zaurus. So you should be able to run any on either Qtopia, or OPIE the apps.

Don't worry about it; he was making jokes. It's a cheesy little game that draws a bunch of computer monitor icons with penguins, red devils, striped apples, red top hats, and other meaningless symbols displayed upon them. A funny little guy with glasses and bushy brown hair comes and replaces the symbols with flags that are breaking into flying rectangles. When you click on the funny guy he disappears in a sploch of red. The main challange of the game is moving a mouse around very fast and clicking on small and badly animated objects. You eventually lose because the longer you play the more of those funny guys come at once. If you play long enough the program encourages you to get a life by segfaulting. -- Keith

Funny for the past day I've been looking into the Zaurus SL-5500. Looked on Cnet price comparison to check prices. Three or four prices between $330 and $350. From the Windows OS side they look great.
From the Linux desktop side there seems to be a problem getting them to sync. No software for the Linux user to get them working provided with the Zaurus. I use Suse, is anyone using a Zaurus on the Linux desktop side? You would think there wouldn't be an issue with Linux.

John, I know they just solved this issue with a new version of qtopia desktop, Linux should sync fine now. Why they didn't do this from the get go, who knows? Anyone with iPAQ running linux, how do you sync with Linux? wes On Thu, 2002-09-12 at 19:31, jfmurphy wrote:

Anyone with iPAQ running linux, how do you sync with Linux? I have actually never tried to sync with my ipaq (i mostly use FreeBSD as my workstation, and QT's sync software doesn't run on FreeBSD). There has been some work on getting sync framework in place for KDE called KitchenSync. I don't know where this project stands (it is scheduled to be in 3.1 release, but i don't know how realistic that is).

Thanks, I received a few messages saying the new version of qtopia desktop runs without a hitch. John "Two roads diverged in a wood, and I -- I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference." -- Robert Frost
