PC to Home Stereo Solution
Is it me or is there no good solution to streaming your OGG and FLAC music files to your home stereo from Linux. Even the Windows solutions seem sparse and are usually proprietary. I have wanted to do this for a long time and every time I start googling for a solution I come up empty. Does anyone have any experience with this? I would appreciate your comments. Thanks, and Happy 4th! -- Gary

I might not understand exactly what you mean, but wouldn't MPD do the trick? What can your radio understand? On Sat, Jul 3, 2010 at 8:46 AM, Gary Hanley <gary@hanley.net> wrote:

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but to play music from computer to stereo, you just need the right combination of cables and mini-jack to RCA converter, and go from the headphone/speaker jack on the computer to some input of the stereo. (I'm using Tape In) Use your favorite software mixer to make sure you have the right channels unmuted and turned up. If you want to play stuff on the stereo and record it on the computer, it gets a little more complicated, but it's still pretty easy. Tape Out to Mic, and record with Audacity or Ardour or something else that I don't know. (Maybe Gramofile if you like CLI.) Greg On 07/03/2010 08:18 AM, Gary Hanley wrote:

Thanks guys. Looking at my post it was obvious I wasn't clear. I meant wireless streaming. My stereo is not in proximity to my Linux box so hardwiring is out. I quickly looked at Squeezebox and I think it might be what I want. I'll spend more time reading up on that soon. If there are other wireless PC-to-home-stereo solutions I'd love to know about them. Thanks again. -- Gary On 07/03/2010 05:44 PM, Jorden Mauro wrote:

You can get FM transmitters that go into the line out of an audio card. That would be the cheapest way. On Jul 3, 2010, at 7:07 PM, Gary Hanley <gary@hanley.net> wrote:

I have one of these and while the idea is great, the implementation sucks. http://www.wi-fiplanet.com/reviews/article.php/3391201/Linksys-Wireless-B-Mu... You might be looking for something like that. On a similar (but side) note: I just picked up a Tivo DVR do-dad/thingy which is really quite awesome. Not only can I do typical DVR like stuff to my Comcast TV signal, I can watch On-demand NetFlix, Blockbuster and Amazon movies, connect to YouTube and with pyTivo running on my Ubuntu server, I can watch all my "backed up" movies, view my pictures and even listen to my mp3 collection. It is really pretty cool. Might not be what you are looking for but maybe it's more? I've always thought putting a Chumby (http://www.chumby.org) on top of the TV/Stereo might be the answer, esp with Pandora or some other streaming app running on there. John
I ended up buying a cheap netbook from woot.com to plug into my stereo. I put eeebuntu on it which gives me access to all of the various Linux audio players and well as Flash and Firefox. I can play Flash audio online or stream from the iTunes collection on the Mac in the other room. I use a FOSS server to serve the music library with Apple's iTunes sharing protocol, but its name escapes me at the moment. -Adam On Jul 3, 2010, at 19:07, Gary Hanley <gary@hanley.net> wrote:

I second Squeezebox, I have two of them (3rd gen & a Duet). BTW, if you have (or would buy) an iPhone or iTouch, the iPeng app that runs on that platform beats the Duet RF controller (aka "SBC") for usability, so you could save yourself the cost of the SBC and just get the player box. I haven't looked into the Squeezebox Touch product they have now...

Sonos! Full disclosure: I work for them :) The truth is that Sonos is far and away the best solution if you want multi-room ... if you just want point-to-point and you're hacker-friendly (which is probably the case, as you're on this list) then squeezebox is cheaper, fine for a single connection, and allows you to hack their box. If you want a full treatise on why and where Sonos is better, I'm more than happy to oblige. If you're really nice to me, I may be able to give you a coveted friends-and-family coupon that can get you a discount :) Cheers, Lee On Tue, Jul 6, 2010 at 2:39 PM, Brett Russ <bruss@alum.wpi.edu> wrote:

Hope this is appropriate. I prefer to do local sale only with cars so I thought what the heck. Here are the details: 1963 Mercury Monterey Custom 2 Door Hardtop Breezeway Here is a rare near-mint condition 2-door version of the 1963 Monterey. Barn find! Engine compartment is very clean. This car frame and floor are solid. The frame, floors and under carriage of this car are very clean. Car has been primed white. Has installed 15" tires, and includes original 14" tires. Any questions? Just call 978-870-5908 (Andy) between 10 AM and 8 PM. Plenty of pictures here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280531424951 I'm 100% legit. My refs are on eBay. Also, what I might have for sale is an IBM ThinkPad (pre-Lenovo, came with 2000 License). -- Andrew Udvare 978-870-5908
