While doing "tar xvjf /mnt/gentoo/portage-latest.tar.bz2 -C /mnt/gentoo/usr" the machine stopped dead. This has happened twice. I fear that I do not have enough hard disk space, but I would hope for a gentler error message. Here is Gentoo Install's last gasp while extracting the Portage snap shot. Is there a way that I can get back to this stage? If I power cycle I get back to the livecd prompt and all my INSTALL work is lost - I think. If [stop a] works I still must boot cdrom to get started again. Any ideas? Here is the hard disk/partition setup. i doubt disk space has anything to do with it ... if the machine bit it like this, it's because the kernel barfed either due to bad driver or bad hardware i'd try a few diff livecds and if those dont help, drop into the #gentoo-sparc channel on irc.freenode.net where all of the sparc guys can give you real inside pointers -mike

This will test the machine a bit more and let you know what's happening. Also, the Ultra 1s had a bad problem with the CPU fans, I ended up replacing dozens of them at a past job. Open the case and make sure the CPU fan is running. While oyu're in there, blow out any dust you can with some compressed air, just to make sure. If the CPU fan isn't spinning, then you know where there problem is. Also, if I could, I'd just give you some old Sparc 60s we're scapping here at work... :] John john@stoffel.org
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Why not also try an emerge sync as opposed to exploding the latest portage tarball. More to what others are saying, my laptop that overheats has a similar problem where it will tank under an enourmous load (the temp gets to 84C). I never had a problem with the fan on the sparc so I never replaced it. Eric John Stoffel wrote:
