Network problem: mine or theirs?
Hi all, I have a problem accessing the Internet. On precisely every other attempt, I get failures. For example, every other unique URL I click in Netscape gives me the following error: A network error occurred while Netscape was receiving data. (Network error: connection reset by peer) Try connecting again. I suspect that my network provider's DNS server is having problems. Since I'm a DHCP client of AT&T Broadband, I tried removing all but one of the nameserver lines in the /etc/resolv.conf file to see if one of them was flaky. After trying all 3 provided nameservers uniquely, either this isn't the problem, or they're all flaky. Any thoughts? You can set up a caching nameserver on your local machine that queries the root DNS servers fairly easily. That way you could be sure if it was their DNS servers or not (by not using theirs). Have you tried another web browser (ie lynx, opera, mozilla) to see if it's netscape? Can you ftp to remote sites without problem? -Marc ----- Original Message ----- From: "Andy Stewart" <astewart@world.std.com> To: "WLUG" <wlug@mail.wlug.org> Sent: Saturday, February 24, 2001 10:20 AM Subject: [Wlug] Network problem: mine or theirs?

This doesn't look like a DNS issue - it sounds like the tcp stream that Netscape opened to suck down a file got closed abrubtly. Try starting up a running ping to a site while you're browsing it to see if there's any packet loss. -- Frank Sweetser rasmusin at wpi.edu, fs at suave.net | $ x 15 Full-time WPI Network Tech, Part time Linux/Perl guy | I have plenty of common sense, I just choose to ignore it. --- Calvin
Hi all, I've isolated this problem to one machine on my home network. Other machines on my home network seem to be OK. That would put the problem in the "mine" category. :-) Now, to figure out what's going on..... It appears not to be DNS as a ping command to a variety of hosts at least returns the correct IP address. Time to do more investigation. Later, Andy Frank Sweetser wrote:
