Well, the network is acceptable. I've seen some outages -- the recent thunderstorms put them off the air for over a day, but I'm not running anything mission critical. I really like the bandwidth. Their support is another matter. They rarely respond to email, and then after a couple of days. Their frontline support is clueless. They claimed one problem was because my email address was case sensitive. It wasn't (I tested), and when I informed them of that fact, their email communication stopped. They like you to call their phone line rather than use email, but the wait on the line is inexcusable. They claim that the wait is short, but I've never experience a short wait. Bill

My daughter in Southboro has Charter and I set up a router to her two (win98/linux) boxes. When Charter came, I provided my notebook running win98 for them to use to confirm the connection worked and then, the moment they went out the door, I disconnected the notebook and switche the cable modem to each of her computers and confirmed they both worked. Then I tried the router and lost the connection. A trip to the website of the cable modem manufacturer indicated a related model liked a crossover ethernet cable between the modem and a router. I tried that and the system has been running fine without any intervention on my part since then. doug -- Douglas R Waud 17 Lantern Lane, Shrewsbury, MA, 01545-2006 http://www.ummed.edu/pub/d/drw/

I haven't used Charter for very long (2 months at the most) for net access, but I only had a problem once. When I eventually got through on the telephone, they were as stumped as I was (although there had apparantly been a surge of problems that morning in my area) ... modem would shut off whenever the activity LED first blinked. We eventually agreed that a tech would come out and look at it. 15 minutes after I hung up, it was working again. As far as setting it up: when the techs came, I let them mess with my father's Win98 computer. They even ran a new line to the house for better reception. After they left, I rewired a bit. But I got away with a plain cable from the modem to a hub, not a crossover. (on another note... I see they've finally synced chartercom.com and After they left, I rewired a bit. But I got away with a plain cable from the modem to a hub, not a crossover. I'd detail my home network setup, but I'm not entirely sure I totally understand it anymore, after all the changes it's gone through. -- Aaron Haviland orion [at] tribble [dot] dyndns [dot] org Dudley, MA 01571 <jannie> those poor bastards in dimension eyestickjabbing have it worse than all of us (4/3/2001)

I was not implying a crossover cable was a general solution, just that it was one more thing to try when desperate :-) Frankly I was surprised it worked and still am not sure why :-) doug
It is my understanding that a crossover cable is needed when connecting two similar devices such as 2 switches or 2 routers. Maybe your cable modem has some builtin router functionality?! On Saturday 14 July 2001 08:49, you wrote:

It's kinda disturbing to use an ISP that's run by one of the big bigwigs from M$, then turn around and use the OS that they target as being satanic -- Aaron Haviland orion [at] tribble [dot] dyndns [dot] org <insert file="~.signature" type="random" />
