-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 HI Everybody, Time flies, especially in the summer. I can't believe its already time for another WLUG meeting. Our meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, August 10th at 7:00 PM. What will we discuss this month? I was hoping somebody had an iRivier or iPod MP3 player with the Linux software working that would bring it to the meeting to demo it, but so far, nobody has volunteered. (iRiver, iPod, iAudio, for what does the 'i' stand - individual??). One possible area of interest is directory services (LDAP). I don't think we've ever had a talk on that subject. Its my understanding that LDAP is good for more than just creating a giant list of email addresses for an organization. Another possible idea would be a talk about databases. What are the differences between MySQL and PostgreSQL - are they technical or is this a religious war? OK, I've tossed out a few ideas, but to make it work, we need a volunteer. Please send me email if you are interested in leading the discussion on either these proposed topics or something else of interest to the group. I'll see about setting up my iRiver with my laptop and bringing it to the meeting but it isn't going to take more than 10 minutes tops to show off. I'd be very interested in an LDAP talk though... Frank

HI Frank, I didn't think it would take a whole meeting to talk about MP3 players, but if 2 or 3 people brought different ones, it would be interesting. If you get it working on your laptop, it would be great to see at a meeting. Thanks! If my Rio still worked, I'd have brought that in too... I used to load the beast with MP3's from my Linux box. Shame it (the Rio) died a mysterious death. :( The LDAP discussion has my attention, though. :D -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- William Smith wsmith-at-chezsmith-dot-com Fall River, MA http://www.chezsmith.com
Well, as usual, I have something to say on this matter....whether or not I have something to actual ADD, ill leave up to you! We use MS Active Directory to authenticate users onto our linux servers. Altho I am no expert, I can share with ya'll my config files and experiance. I am also interested in hearing about LDAP as well. --- Andy Stewart <andystewart@comcast.net> wrote:

Re: Possible LDAP talk sometime soon... I agree, which is why I proposed it. :-) However, I can't give this talk since I don't know anything about it. I'm still hoping for a volunteer from the audience. Any takers? If not for this meeting, some future meeting? HI Eric et al, Many people have indicated an interest in LDAP, but as yet, nobody has volunteered to do an LDAP presentation. If/when this happens, it will be at some future WLUG meeting (not Aug 2005). I would like to see this happen! In an earlier email, Frank Moody said that he would see about setting up his iRiver with his laptop. With that, I think the meeting would then be about MP3 players. Eric, please bring your ipod and whatever you need to do a demo of it. If anybody has a different type of MP3 player that works with Linux, bring it along, (the more, the merrier). I had hoped to have my new MP3 player for the meeting, but the dude on eBay from whom I purchased this player is taking his time shipping it to me (auction closed 02-aug, not shipped yet...). Thanks! I wish I could make the meetings, since I'd like to talk with people about getting udev to work with these MP3 players, since it's a semi black art. Though there is a good writeup on the net about how to use udevinfo to help setup things. Someone needs to write a tool to scan the bus, ask you to insert the device, then re-scans the bus and suggests the udev rule(s) to make the device do what you want. Then, in the futire, it would just work! As it is, writing udev rules is a bit of a hit or miss, though once you get your mind wrapped around using udevinfo, it' isn't too bad to figure out what to do. John
A little late and I'm not really a public speaker but... I have recently configured a fairly complex directory which backs a number of applications Unix/Linux accounts , SAMBA domain, Open Exchange Groupware, Jive Messenger (a jabber server), postfix, VPN Concentrator 3500. All user / group account information is managed through smbldap scripts from IDELX which I patched to also support the Open Exchange attributes and some convenience stuff for bulk adding users and keeping passwords in sync across all applications. This is an attempt to rid my network of Microsoft and it's working well so far, for a company of 63 people. If someone is looking for some uses for LDAP out side of just an email directory I may be able to help. Or if you just have any questions. I would not consider my self an LDAP authority but it took quite a bit of work/research to get this working. -Matt On 8/8/05, John Stoffel <john@stoffel.org> wrote:
