When the Xwindows locks up, I sometimes am able to get it back with: ALT-CTRL-F1 to switch to a text console. At least it might be logging errors to the test console at that point as well. It might just be that your disk is dying, or has bad blocks. I'd boot off a rescue image and do a 'badblocks' scan of the disk and see what pops up. Good luck! John
