hi Just wondering if anybody here has had any problems/complaints about the Charter cable modem services? My daughter in Southboro has Charter and I set up a router to her two (win98/linux) boxes. When Charter came, I provided my notebook running win98 for them to use to confirm the connection worked and then, the moment they went out the door, I disconnected the notebook and switche the cable modem to each of her computers and confirmed they both worked. Then I tried the router and lost the connection. A trip to the website of the cable modem manufacturer indicated a related model liked a crossover ethernet cable between the modem and a router. I tried that and the system has been running fine without any intervention on my part since then.
I haven't used Charter for very long (2 months at the most) for net access, but I only had a problem once. When I eventually got through on the telephone, they were as stumped as I was (although there had apparantly been a surge of problems that morning in my area) ... modem would shut off whenever the activity LED first blinked. We eventually agreed that a tech would come out and look at it. 15 minutes after I hung up, it was working again. As far as setting it up: when the techs came, I let them mess with my father's Win98 computer. They even ran a new line to the house for better reception. After they left, I rewired a bit. But I got away with a plain cable from the modem to a hub, not a crossover. (on another note... I see they've finally synced chartercom.com and After they left, I rewired a bit. But I got away with a plain cable from the modem to a hub, not a crossover. I'd detail my home network setup, but I'm not entirely sure I totally understand it anymore, after all the changes it's gone through. -- Aaron Haviland orion [at] tribble [dot] dyndns [dot] org Dudley, MA 01571 <jannie> those poor bastards in dimension eyestickjabbing have it worse than all of us (4/3/2001)
