Thanks Brad for the additional help. Been looking for a new area to explore in the world of Linux. Hmm, "Linux and iPods," interesting... Doug p.s. Being a big fan of the movie "2001, A Space Odyssey," I had to laugh reading the following from the entry for iPod in Wikipedia: The name iPod was proposed by Vinnie Chieco, a freelance copywriter, who (with others) was called by Apple to figure out how to introduce the new player to the public. After Chieco saw a prototype, he thought of the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey and the phrase "Open the pod bay door, Hal!", which refers to the white EVA Pods of the Discovery One spaceship. Also movie title, 2001, same as Apple iPod launch date, October, 2001 brad <maitre@ccs.neu.edu> Sent by: wlug-bounces@mail.wlug.org 09/19/2007 06:31 PM Please respond to Worcester Linux Users Group <wlug@mail.wlug.org> To Worcester Linux Users Group <wlug@mail.wlug.org> cc Subject Re: [Wlug] Can Feisty Fawn solve an iPod problem? Doug, You do not want to copy folders from the ipod. iTunes organizes the ipod directories in a non-trivia manor. I would suggest using banshee or amarok to read the iTunesDB on the ipod. You may need to tell these programs where the ipod is located, e.g. /media/ipod/. You can drag and drop the songs from the ipod to your local machine, note you may need to tell these programs where to copy these files in your home directory. Explore these programs, banshee and amarok, to learn how to use them to get the most out of your ipod. - brad On Wed, 19 Sep 2007 12:35:24 -0400, douglas.r.aker@verizon.com wrote:
Thanks Ben for your input.
But when you say "copy them over to Vista PC," my question is, Copy what? When I mount iPod on Linux laptop, I see a complex directory structure under /media/ipod. Do I copy the Music folder? Do I copy the iTunes folder? What are the downstream consequences of copying just the Music folder and *not* the iTunes folder? I could file copy everything under /media/ipod, move it to Vista, but will it be in a form that iTunes will recognize? Maybe the procedure looks like: 1) Export songs using gtkpod on Linux, 2) Import songs using iTunes on Vista. Not sure.

In the worst case, once you have the 350 songs off the Ipod, you could just copy them over to the vista pc and then itunes on the vista pc will take care of the rest...
