This should be supported out-of-the-box on Fedora Core.
Back around Core3 and Core4 I used "soundon" and "soundoff" from <http://www.4front-tech.com/>. That is where this all started. Open Sound System does not work either. Here is what happens when I type 'soundon'.
OSS/Free in the Linux kernel is obsolete and there is no reason to use it anymore. I have no experience with the commercial version of OSS, since I have never had any need to use it.
