Depending on what you're trying to do, you might also want to check out Cygwin: http://www.cygwin.com/
"Cygwin is a UNIX environment, developed by Red Hat, for Windows."
Well that's in quotes, so it's just a character string, but lest somebody mistake it for an assertion... Cygwin was developed by Cygnus Support, a company that was founded (at least in part) by John Gilmore of EFF fame. It predates RedHat by about five years. The made money selling support services for GNU software (hence the name cyGNUs). In addition to Cygwin, they did some work on gcc, and hosted the guile project for a while (Guile is GNU Scheme). They were bought by RedHat shortly after the RedHat IPO had them rolling in cash. I don't mean to get too pedantic, but next someone will be telling me that Microsoft developed DOS, and I'll have to really rant. Typing http://www.cygnus.com/ just takes you to RedHat, but http://www.redhat.com/about/presscenter/cygnus_1999/redhat-cygnus111599.html gives RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. and SUNNYVALE, CA---November 15, 1999---Red Hat®, Inc.
