My goal is to run linux with win2k as a virtual machine for the few work related things I need.

Depending on what you're trying to do, you might also want to check out Cygwin: http://www.cygwin.com/ "Cygwin is a UNIX environment, developed by Red Hat, for Windows." It's not an x86 emulator/vmware clone, but it has a lot of the UNIX/Linux tools.
