I’ve been using an OPNsenser firewall on Charter Spectrum since I moved, and it was my only choice. I set up Unbound DNS to point to cloud flare’s DNS as a backup and its worked really well.

Extra bonus, it supports a number of DNS Blacklists as well as custom ones for blocking adds, tracking,…,etc. Its a very granular way to manage your external access, The only down side is its not purely based on Linux but Free BSD. On the flip side, its web interface is really good, and you rarely if ever have two drop to the terminal after install.

Or just run your own fully recursive (not forwarding) DNS resolver on your own router...

We have had Charter | Spectrum Internet for around 12 years.

One thing I've noticed is their Charter Owned DNS servers are down (or really slow) a lot.

When mine was down I found I could ping by IP number, but not by name. Consider pointing both your DNS servers elsewhere.  Easy enough to test for a week.

It's makes my home WiFi users happier.

Hi all,

Has anyone else with Charter/Spectrum noticed that they're seeing alot
more short 2-5 minute outages with Spectrum?  Basically it all drops,
then a few minutes on my router (OPNsense 20.7.<latest> running on a
PCengines.sh APU4d4) I get the exact same IP address renewed via
DHCP.  It's really really sucky and impacts the kids and myself
working from home.

Tried all kinds of things, but the damn thing keeps crapping out
randomly.  I need to get them to look at this, but even with their
automated system, and hacving them reset the Cable Modem remotely, it
still fails randomly.

Cheers,
John
