I'm sorry, I got the emails mixed up. It could be a driver issue, but I only suspect that due to the freezing under heavy video load. Could I also suggest trying a different video card to eliminate hardware issues? The video card may have started to fail as you switched distros, unlikely but possible?

Hi Jason,

My graphics chip is the ATI Radeon RV280 (Radeon 9200 PRO), and it is
running the Free Software driver.  There is nothing proprietary in use
for the video.  I don't generally like to use the proprietary drivers,
but perhaps I could try it to see if it makes any difference.
