Good catch, John - I should have mentioned that! (I do keep my monitors off as well). Yes - given I'm on i3, I do a `DISPLAY=:0 i3lock &` and a simple Ctrl+C is good for killing the x0vncserver started in the SSH shell. Thanks for pointing out those very important caveats.
