Marie, I constantly see http://www.emperorlinux.com/ in the Linux magazines that I frequently read, however I can't say I've ever bought one from them. Emperor offers a variety of "distros" including my favorite "Ubuntu".
Their prices seem a bit high, but might make a good point of reference at the least.
I saw them at a Linux show last year... They had a booth there. They seem to have a decent spread of hardware, whether you want the system for Day-to-Day work or for specialized work (they had a laptop there, for example, that was rigged to do 3D! Very nice...). I agree that their prices are a little high, but given that most laptop hardware always seem to have a few "quirks", it may be worth it.
Being strapped for cash myself I decided to get a used laptop on Ebay and trust my luck. For just a few bills I got a Compaq Armada M700 (which I am writing this email on right now). It's processor is only a P3 @ 1GHz, but I appreciate it more and more everyday. Ubuntu Linux installed flawlessly on it and I even got a Belkin 802.11b/g wifi card working without a hitch.
Excellent... :) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- William Smith wsmith-at-chezsmith-dot-com Fall River, MA http://www.chezsmith.com
