The problem no device maker wants to admit is that having a usb protrusion sticking out the side of a laptop is dangerous. 

The expresscard and sd card slots at least recess into the laptop for safety.

I went looking for other expresscards and there don't seem to be too
many varieties out there. I guess, as a port, it just couldn't compete
with USB.
