Hi all,

I asked about it when I got home tonight and there were a few comments:

- The one item that has been a distraction to him is that the fan ramps up on occasion (for no apparent reason). I have noticed the fan noise myself at times - it's not the quietest @ 100%. He blames something in Garuda, but hasn't nailed down what it is yet (KDE on a Core 12th gen). If I were to run `stress --cpu 16` on my T14 AMD 2nd Gen, I won't hear my fan over his despite sitting at our own computers.
- He got the DIY version and REALLY appreciated the build experience. Everything that's good about the framework really stands out when you put one together. I've helped him change a video card in the past - he's not a huge hardware geek, but got this together with zero issue. Everything has a QR code for getting directly to instructions if you need them.
- Frame.work has successfully transitioned from 11th gen to 12th so far, successfully keeping the frame, etc. A neat thing about this is that there are community designs (i.e. printable cases) allowing you to build an SFF PC based on your previous gen mainboard, should you upgrade.
- There are decent community forum pages covering various distros on framework's site. The arch page (as is so often the case) is a great help for finding a consolidated list of tweaks you may need.
- One thing that may be noteworthy to people not fond of using wireless networking when they don't have to is that the 2.5Gbit/s Ethernet adapter (which was only recently released) sticks out the side. I believe it's the only module that does. I guess it's whatever...they are easy enough to swap out when you want to get to a better "on the go mode". It's an RTL8156 and should work fine (linux 5.13+). Wireless has been great.
- He recommends checking out the LTT video(s) on it and said their review matches his perception, though none of the minor qualms they had about the device have been concerns for him (links below).
- The screen frame didn't review all that well from LTT. They did since change the design for the 12th gen ( https://knowledgebase.frame.work/explainer-lid-rigidity-hinge-force-the-cnc-top-cover-and-the-new-4-0kg-hinge-kit-ByAxb0Ia9 ). It feels pretty comparable to my T14, but I'm pretty sure he'd have a fair bit easier task changing his than I would, should it ever actually be necessary.
- He got this laptop about a month and a half ago, so not much more we can offer about reliability. I'd scan their forums.

LTT videos (note, Linus did invest nearly $250k in Frame.work): https://www.youtube.com/c/LinusTechTips/search?query=frame.work

There was another recent LTT video (a quick take or something like that) about an HP laptop. It seems that perhaps the framework may be having some impact on other manufacturer's repairability? NOT the same as upgrading the mainboard, but still a good thing:

Enjoy!

I might be in the market for a new laptop soon and this definitely goes on the list.

Chris, what has your roomates experience been with the durability?
Tim.

They are quite good. My housemate/coworker got one. We work exclusively
in free software. He put Garuda on it and has full functionality, but
did have to do a tweak or two. He got the 12th gen, and purchased
ram/ssd separately (they price those pretty high).

Chris
