I am thinking of switching my local phone line provider, perhaps another company may provide DSL on my telephone line? Am I correct? Or if verizon cannot do it, none of them can do it?
Your only choice (so far as I know) for local phone calling is Verizon. The Town of Shrewsbury has plans to offer local calling (they currently offer long distance), but it is not yet available. DSL is separate from who your local phone service provider may happen to be...
Speaking about the cable choice, 'townisp' of Shrewsbury charges $50 for a month of access with a speed limit of 25-30 KB/sec and a setup charge of $99. and also a download limit of 2GB a month which is a real drawback if you like to test new distributions like myself. I do not think that their offer is attractive, am I wrong?
I have Shrewsbury Cable. I opted for the business level package (500K Symmetric) because I wanted static IP and do run some servers... Overall, they have done a great job! No outages once they got rid of their initial subcontractor. There have only been two outages I can remember in well over a year, and they were planned. I received email a couple of weeks prior to the outage and the service is back up when they predicted. By the way, if you get CATV from the Town, they give you a $10 discount on the Internet connectivity (or something like that).
Anyways..., being new in the US I need recommendations on which way to go for high speed internet access. I hope there are some people on this list living in Shrewsbury and do have high speed internet access despite Verizon Company. :)
XO Communications used to offer DSL, but the CLEC they used went under without notice and left thousands without service. Fortunately, I had moved to Shrewsbury Cable just a few weeks prior to this event and was spared the loss of connectivity. You can always check dslreports.com to see what is available for your phone number...
