Well, I'm not a Network Admin, but I would suggest the cheapest way to start is to build a home network with a hub and at least cheap 3 PCs doing different functions to serve the network (DNS, Sendmail, etc.) Get some networking books and tweak, tweak, tweak! After that you can either build up your network with more hardware or take mid-to-senior level classes.
