A trip to the website of the cable modem manufacturer indicated a related model liked a crossover ethernet cable between the modem and a router. I tried that and the system has been running fine without any intervention on my part since then.
After they left, I rewired a bit. But I got away with a plain cable from the modem to a hub, not a crossover.
I was not implying a crossover cable was a general solution, just that it was one more thing to try when desperate :-) Frankly I was surprised it worked and still am not sure why :-)
