I always power down my cable modem when doing changes like that. Not sure what you're using, but if it's anything external, that generally helps "register" the new NIC. Cox in Phoenix always said to leave the cable modem unplugged for 1/2 hour. I suspect that was more so people wouldn't bug them. :) - Bob
